The Young Scottish Filmmakers Prize is presented by Glasgow Film Theatre and Eden Court Highlands. The prize has been launched in partnership with the Glasgow Short Film Festival and was designed in consultation with GMAC Film. 
Glasgow Film delivers the Young Scottish Filmmakers Prize with support from the BFI Film Academy, awarding funding from the National Lottery.

Categories of Competition

There are 2 categories of competition:
1. Films that have been produced independently and on a self-led basis  (i.e. the production has not received any formal assistance such as guidance from a university or filmmaking programme and has not received any formal funding)
2. For films that have been produced with formal support, mentoring/guidance (i.e. from a University course or from a filmmaking programme) or have received formal funding

Terms and Conditions

  • Applicants must be 18 or older to submit a film to the Young Scottish Filmmakers Prize competition.  
  • Applicants must be no older than 25 at the time of completing the film.  
  • The short film submitted must be between 2-20 minutes in duration.  
  • The short film must have been completed in the last 24 months and cannot have been submitted to this specific prize in the past.  
  • You cannot previously have won the Young Scottish Filmmakers Prize.  
  • To be considered the film must have been primarily produced in Scotland, and the applicant must currently reside in Scotland.  
  • The lead applicant named on the application, should be a senior crew member, such as Producer or Director. Please note - 
  • The lead applicant will be the main contact that the YSFP team will communicate with. 
  • In the instance of a film being selected as one of two winning YSFP films, the lead applicant will be the recipient of the funding. 
  • The lead applicant is expected to be the representative for the film at all YSFP events/screenings. 
  • It is expected that the lead applicant will communicate in advance with the YSFP team regarding crew attendance at YSFP events, for example, if another senior crew member would like to participate in Q&As etc.  
  • Film Submissions will be judged in 2 categories:  
  • Category 1 - Films that have been produced independently and on a self-led basis  i.e. the production has not received any formal assistance such as guidance from a university or filmmaking program and has not received any formal funding 
  • Category 2 - For films that have been produced with formal support, mentoring/guidance (i.e. from a University course or from a filmmaking programme) or have received formal funding   
  • Please make sure you provide the correct information about the circumstances of your film, to ensure the film is considered in the most suitable category.  
  • To be considered, films must be appropriate for age 15 audiences, please see the age ratings guidance. https://www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/15  
  • Glasgow Film Theatre and Glasgow Short Film Festival reserve the right to place age ratings on the shortlisted films. (For public screening purposes).  
  • The winners of the prize from each category will be awarded £1,000, the winners will not receive their funding by cash but through submitting spending requests made to Glasgow Film to purchase equipment, travel etc.   
  • All funding must be used towards the intentions outlined in the applications, unless an exception is requested and then approved by Glasgow Film. All funding must be used with the intention of furthering the progression of the filmmaker’s or filmmaking team’s career(s). Examples of suitable uses of the funding are - a camera, film festival submission fees and workshops/courses. The prize money cannot be contributed toward life expenses such as rent. 
  • This prize money must be requested by the end of February 2027.  
  • Shortlisted filmmakers will be expected to contribute to Glasgow Film and BFI Film Academy evaluation processes as part of the Young Scottish Filmmakers prize project.  
  • This competition is being administered Glasgow Film, in partnership with Glasgow Short Film Festival and Eden Court Highlands. This project is funded by BFI Film Academy. By submitting an application, you are therefore consenting to the information you provide in your application being shared between Glasgow Film, Glasgow Short Film Festival, Eden Court Highlands, and BFI Film Academy.  
  • Glasgow Film is the trading name of Glasgow Film Theatre. The registered office of Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) is 12 Rose Street, Glasgow, G3 6RB. Glasgow Film Theatre is a company limited by guarantee and is registered as a charity (No.SC005932) with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.  
  • Glasgow Short Film Festival (GSFF) is registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (No.SC049556) with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. The registered office of Glasgow Short Film Festival is at 60 Tradeston Street, Glasgow, G5 8BH.
